The Rocky Mountain AMC Club has a long and rich history in the State of Colorado. It was started in 1977 by two local Denver residents as an official chapter of The Classic AMX Club, International. At that time, the name was The Rocky Mountain AMX Club and it was just for the lovers of the two-seat sports car from AMC who reside in the beautiful mountainous state of Colorado.

In the early 1990s, The Rocky Mountain AMX Club, still going strong decided to broaden its scope and take in members with interests in all AMC cars from 1955 to 1987. This included Rebels, Ramblers, Americans, Classics, Javelins, Hornets, Gremlins, Concords, Spirits, Eagles and even AMC Jeeps. This expansion more than doubled the size of the club overnight to over 50 people. We now have members in eight states, including Colorado (of course), Iowa, Arizona, California, Kansas, Nebraska, New Mexico and Utah. Over the years, the club has produced a small, local newsletter to inform the Colorado membership of hobby news and events on the local, regional and national level. They have also put on a local Show and Shine every year in the Denver area and even has hosted the national event for the parent club three times. The original Classic AMX Club, International also expanded in the late 1980s and became AMC World Clubs. Both the national and the local are Colorado Non Profit Corporations. Their respective charters state that they exist to help anyone interested in the preservation and restoration of any AMC car.

Many in The Rocky Mountain AMC Club are into the high performance AMC cars. Stock, Custom or modified cars. Some have been involved with track racing, some drag racing , some no racing at all. Membership ranges from blue collar folks to professional people from all walks of life in the state of Colorado. It is a pleasant mixture of people and the AMC cars they enjoy, however they enjoy them. Some members restore the cars stock, some customized. All of these people and their AMC cars enjoy the hobby from racing, to just showing to just driving--AMC cars. This club is all AMC, and only AMC.

A great wealth of experience and information is in the Rocky Mountain AMC Club. Since the national headquarters of the parent club, AMC World Clubs is located in Arvada, Colorado, the over 30 years of AMC experience and the internationally known personal AMC historical collection of Larry and Linda Mitchell is available to Rocky Mountain AMC Club members. It is a sight to see and includes original literature from the early 1950s to the end of AMC in 1987, some of it extremely rare items. AMC models and toys are there, three display cases full of the stuff that was done 20-30 years ago, not the "current model" toys. The collection also has most of the "current" toys, but with so many having been produced in the last few years, there is no room to display them! The Mitchell collection even has such one-of-a-kind items like the original sign off the AMC Assembly Plant in Kenosha and George Hurst's red, white and blue leather AMC racing jacket! You can see this collection by making arrangements with Larry in advance. He is always happy to show people. Larry is founder of the national club and still National Director and national newsletter editor.

Another clubmember, Werner Fruhwirth has been into AMC cars most all of his life and has tons of experience to share with fellow Colorado members. Werner has over 10 AMC cars, from AMXs to a Matador X and was once a parts manager for a couple different local Denver AMC dealers years ago. He has a lot of knowledge of AMC parts and the cars themselves. He also has a fairly big personal collection of AMC literature and scale models and toys. By appointment, he is happy to share his collection with fellow AMC fans.

  • Rocky Mountain AMC Club is a Denver, Colorado based club that services the Rocky Mountain Region.

The Rocky Mountain AMC Club has some local people who have parts to help others with their AMC restoration projects. AMX Enterprises is owned by Larry Mitchell in Arvada (at his home) and offers in stock reproduction parts from Metro, REM and other sources. Larry and Werner also build AMC engines for people, stock to mild performance. The link to the national club provides even more parts and restoration help for Colorado members.

We have the honor of having a few historically significant AMC cars in the Denver area, owned by local clubmembers. One is a genuine 1966 AMX pre-production "prototype" that is in Colorado Springs. Another is the only two-seat AMX to ever race Pikes Peak. Roger Mears Pikes Peak 1979 Spirit AMX that won its class in 1979 is here in the area. There are even cars that have raced in the famed Silver State Classic Challenge Open Road Race in Nevada at speeds over 150 mph! Two of our local clubmembers have 401 powered Pacers!

More than a dozen of our local members have had their AMC cars featured nationally in books, magazines, on trading cards and in calendars. Two beautiful AMC cars that were featured on the cover of a recent AMC musclecar book are owned by local clubmembers. And many have AMC cars that are serious national trophy winners and excellent examples of show quality restorations. And our members are always having fun restoring or racing new AMC cars to the area.
