I recently picked up a 74 727 out of a International 2wd pickup truck.I was planning on installing this in my 74 javelin.Problem is the tailshafts are a little different. The one from the truck is shorter and has a yoke bolted on the end of the tailshaft. My car trans just slips in the tailshaft-question is-can I swap tailshafts from my 727 I took out of the car.Or would it be possible to just lenghten the driveshaft to fit and change the yoke? HELP!

Hi, I have never heared of IH using AMC engines... though they have like displacments. I think your barking up the wrong tree. It would be best to just go to a reputible wrecker and get one off a AMC car. By the way if your car did not come with a 727 you are going to need a different drive shaft (It is possibly a weak version used on 304, 290, or I6 tranny). Might as well go to a drive line specialist and get one made.

For what it is worth... spending a little extra, you could have gone to a Jeep Th400 (you will need to swap out the output shaft and rear housing, but that can be done during rebuild), since your having some troubles already they are more frequent at the wreckers than a AMC 727. Sure it may cost a little but I never trust a used tranny since your looking at more than 25 years of service.

my guess is the 401/727 combo that was in the truck was not a stock set up??? My 74 javelin allready had a 727 in it, drive shaft is the right length and all.I just dont know why the tail shaft is shorter on the trans I picked up? Or if I can just put my tailshaft on it-do the old swap a roo

304 Dude- talking about the th400, it sounds like you are talking about swaping out the tailshafts to make the th400 fit? Thats exactly what I want to do with these two transmissions. The cases come apart at the rear of the main body of the transmissions. They are both 727 Amc, just one has a short tail shaft and the other is long, as for the rest they are identical.Maybe I just need to take one apart and check it out.I know the trans with the short tailshaft is a very good trans.

just found out this info-the short tailshaft trans and 401 originally came out of a 2wd wagoneer-so can I just switch the tailshaft housings? come on you trans experts!Make me smarter!

For the people who may not be aware of this, International Havestor (IH) bought AMC engines and drivelines from the company. IH only bought the 401 V-8 for their light duty pickups. Just sort of a trivial thing I guess, so if you ever hear of anyone saying that they got an AMC engine in their IH truck, they are not pulling your leg. It is possible for this to be actually true.
