    Smile 401's and the such

    AMC did not really keep track of how many 401's that installed in Javelins, they did keep track of the trim levels such as the base model, the
    SST model, and the AMX trim model. The only way that I know of to verify that your Javelin came with the 401 is to look at the vin code and the letter code thats in the middle of the code should say "X". This is the engine code that indicates that car had a 401 to start with.
    The other codes such as paint codes, trim codes and the such I could help you with. I have a 71 Javelin Service manual (covers a few other cars as well) and it has the codes definitions explained in it. I also own a 71 Javelin SST and have had it for over 20 years.

    Default

    1971 Javelin production: 7,105
    1971 Javelin SST production: 17,707
    1971 Javelin AMX production: 2,054

    Engine specs and options:
    http://www.amx-perience.com/1971JavAMX.htm

    1971 Engine codes:
    E = 232
    A = 258
    H = 304 2 bbl
    N = 360 2 bbl
    P = 360 4 bbl
    Z = 401 4 bbl

    (Actually the X = 1968-70 390 4 bbl and Y = 1970 Machine)

    Color: Wild Plum = D9

    It may be easiest if you post (or PM) VIN and door tag info for a complete breakdown of codes.
