Well another brake light on.lol.Press brakes nothing, when I turn the lights on the brakes are all light up.I checked the switch by the pedal and when I put a volt meter to it nothing but when I press on the brakes I get volts. Would that mean switch is working??? Any Ideas?????on what steps to check. Also no turn signals. You think it is in the cam in the steering whell??? I guess I'm reaching.
Second question .Took the steering wheel cover off and found the ground wire disconnected on the cover.Hooked it up and when you press the horn I can now hear the horn relay clicking but no horn.Any Ideas????
What a cluster ****.lol.

Any Ideas would be greatly appreciated.Thank you.
I've got a harness complete for the engine and dash ready to yank.lol.lol.

red wire to brake light switch should have power always(key on or off),green wire only has power when switch on(foot on brake pedal).ground wire under steering wheel cover activates horn relay so if relay is clicking, check the horns to see if power getting there.if so your horns are toast/rusted/dead.did you find those two wires where mine were??? call me @ 760-486-4162,sounds like someone was under your dash prior to you getting that car.

red wire to brake light switch should have power always(key on or off),green wire only has power when switch on(foot on brake pedal).

Everything works like the above. Where do you think I should check next???
Like I said when I turn the lights on both filaments on the bulbs are lit.

With lights turned off and key turned on press foot on brakes nothing.

One last thing. When I put the 4 ways on (emergency) flashes in the front.
Nothing in the back.
When I put the 4 ways on with the lights on .Flashes in the front. lights are on in back but no flash.
I don't know what this meanslol.lol. But thats what I'm getting.lol

sounds like a lost puppy was under that dash--sounds like they spliced the tailight lead into the brake light lead and also cut the brake light lead from going into the turn signal control,do front turn signals work(although they may not flash w/rear not connected)? 4 way flasher shares same wires as turn signals.let's just hope that person isn't the new electrician hired to rewire someones house amc-ya

Don't know if it'll help, but here's a link to a wiring diagram:

looked at the diagram posted by Big Bad AMX,check that green wire going to the turn signal connector,it should not have anything spliced into it.also note that once at the connector(running up steering column)the color codes change on the harness going up to the turn signal switch(see diagram).another place to check is AFTER the wires leave the turn signal switch(the leads for the left and right REAR bulbs)check to see if any splicing has been done along there also.that could explain why the BRAKE/TURN filament on the bulb lights up when lights are turned on if the left and right rear bulb leads were spliced into the lead for rear tailights at some point.(anywhere between underdash to tailight sockets)--seen that done by those master techs who think tailights are supposed to be the BRIGHTEST of the two filaments.i run into this when "trainees" fix lights on the semi-trailers i pull while trucking.

Thanks Jeff and Big Bad Amx for your help.I'm not going to let this beat me.lol.Yea Right.lol.Just went out and checked if front lights would flash they don't.I'm going to go thru the steps you told me and see what happens using the wiring diagram.I've got 3 total now plus looking at a wiring harness on the kitchen table.
This thing notice I said thing looks great inside and out but man is the wiring messed up.

When I hooked up the ground on the steering wheel cover I smelled something burning.Touched the drivers horn and the wire leading to it was melting.Disconnected the ground and that stopped.
Here's the best one.you know the lock were you put the key on the steering wheel well you can just turn that with your hand and the car will start. No key.
You guys ready to come down to Fla. all expenses paid?????????
keep looking for smoke down here in the south. If you see it that will be me.lol.lol.
You guys are awesome.Thank you

the more you tell me about this car-----sounds like someone pulled out the ignition key at some time with a slide hammer(like in the original version of gone in 60 seconds).as to the horns, they are definitely fried/shorted out.replace those with known good ones.of course you will have to replace the wire from the horn relay to the horns now that things got a little hot through that wire.and of course make sure no other wires next to the horn leads got melted too.and if someone got abusive with the turn signal switch when the steering wheel was pulled to get access to the lock cylinder on the column---another can of worms could have been opened(please tell me the turn signal switch feels proper, not all loose and sloppy).after you telling me about that starter engaging when you put your foot on the brake????,i'm beginning to wonder just how bad things could be under that dash.

Quit laughing.I can hear you down hear.lol.Turn signal lever feels good and when you click it up or down the light indicator on the dash on the right lights up or turn down the lever and the indicator on the dash on the left lights up.Just doesn't blink.

Ok. whats the difference between a AGC lets say 20 amp fuse and a SFE 20 amp fuse.(AGC looks thinner in side) ?
Hope theres a difference.
OK. In the AMC technical Manual it says use a
Dome-Clock 9 ampere fuse
Park Tail-9 ampere fuse
Stop-14 ampere fuse
Accesseries-14 ampere fuse
Gauges-4 ampere fuse
When I look at the wiring diagrams and whats printed on the fuse box it says:
Dome-Clock 9A
Park Tail 14A
Stop-20A
Accesseries-20A
Gauges- 4A
What amp do you use??? whats printed or stamped on the fuse box????
I was thinking may be the fuses are wrong thats in it.
What do you think ?
Man I owe you'all big time.
Just thinking.lol.lol

blinkers WILL blink when rear bulbs get right(takes 2 bulbs lit for the flasher to work).remember thats how you knew a bulb was dead back then when the signal didn't blink.yes i'm still laughing at that starting issue, just remember to leave it in neutral when it is parked or you might find it in the dining room one day.as to fuses stay as close to what is in manual,if you can find the correct ones.just don't go putting 30 amp fuses on 10amp curcuits, but you will probably go through 6 cases of fuses before you find that lighting issue.i always went with what was on the fuse block as for maximum size

Gotcha Jeff.Gonna give it another try today.
Just wondering do you know where they run the back harness from the back of the car to the dash?
I mean under the foot plate or through the above side headliner? just was trying to get all my ducks in a row.
Thanks.

runs along left edge of floorpan on driver's side under carpet, most likely problem is either before harness runs along floor or it could also be at the tailight sockets if those wires have been cut/spliced.the orange wire is power for the left turn and white is for the right turn, and you'll notice from the diagram they both go directly to turn signal switch connector.thats where they both get power from the brake light switch that runs through the signal switch.

also check the wires that go into the tailight socket as they tend to get damaged by stuff being put in the trunk.every one i have ever owned had bare wires inside the socket from where the wire rubbed against the metal inside the socket.hate to be sending you on all these wild goose chases but i figure by the time i'm done with you,you will know what every wire in that car is for.thats why electrical troubleshooting is so expensive because you HAVE to start at point A and check everything untill you get to point Z.now that you know you have power going through the brake light switch, use a test light that has a point on it allowing you to poke into the wire without cutting it and start chasing the circuit.another question for you--when the lights are turned on,do the turn indicators on the dash light up dimly?

OHHHHH I LOVE YOU MAN.lol.lol.lol.Well did like you said and followed your directions to a tee.GOT BRAKE LIGHTS NOW and running lights after 4.5 hours and going to 2 auto shops after blowing all the bulbs and changed all the fuses to what the technical book said not the max. and $40.00 later.lol.lol.
When I turn the blinker on the left or right now the left or right will be bright.
Sorta like doing it manual like the old days.lol.lol.And I have 4 way flashers all around but still no blinkers only when I do it manually.
YOUR THE GREATEST. THE TRIP IS FREE. You think it's now the steering wheel cam??? lol.lol.

ok now you are getting close, you should have 2 flashers under the dash, one is for the hazard lights and the other is for the turn signals.turn on the hazard lights and feel the flasher(no i'm not getting pornographic here) to find out which one it is(you will feel it clicking on and off).if my memory is correct one is just dangling down under the dash and one is way up behind the instrument cluster.for GP's replace them both.by the way--where was the problem--spliced wires or what????according to wiring diagram the turn signal flasher will have a solid blue wire and a solid brown wire to the plug.the hazard flasher will have red w/white stripe and blue w/white stripe to the plug.now another question--do the front turn signal lights come on with the turn signal switch on the BRIGHT filament like they should(as bright as the flashers).also the hazard lights should also be working at the rear--correct???

Hey Jeff. I guess it was little of both.Mostly I think they had the maximum amps and not the correct fuses. So the power going to the back was lighting both filiments on the bulbs. The 4 ways are working Front and back.Brake lights are working great too. I just checked and the front light is bright when you turn the turn signal on Right or left on the front and back.It might click once than stops.I've already replaced the hazard flasher.T thought that was the turn signal flasher.lol.lol. So that works. Now you got me going. I didn't know there was another flasher. Going under(The dash that is) now.lol.lol.
Geez ,with your knowledge and my stupidity you could probably talk some one to build a whole car over the internet.
Going to look
Thanks so much.gonna try and find that sucker before the parts store closes.

just sounds like a little GREMLIN got into that JAVELIN at one point. take comfort in knowing that you didn't get a super NOVA (burning fireball) out of the deal!saw your latest post, it is behind the instrument cluster.

lol.lol.I'm killing you ain't I.The big bad 1970 AMC Technical Service Manual SAYS It's mounted to a bracket at the upper end of the steering column jacket tube. And according to my 4 wiring diagrams your right it is blue and brown wires.lol.lol. Going back under.lol.lol.

congratulations, you are now on the fast track of becoming an experienced tech.and you didn't have to go all the way to Laramie,WY. to attend WYOTECH.(EXCELLENT PROGRAM). get your tail back under that dash and FIND that flasher and make sure it's there or someone hasn't spliced the blue and brown wires together--and---???. by the way, hopefully you will have gotten a few scratches on the back of your hand you can wear with PRIDE.(in my days of being a service manager,i would have quoted you an estimate of about 300-400 bucks to chase that wiring down so think of the money you saved---go do something special for the kids with the money you saved) it has been a pleasure to help a fellow AMC owner keep a Javelin alive, especially a rare one like yours AMC-ya

You are the MAN.You had to be one Hell of a service manager.
Found the flasher in the blind. Had to replace it by feel.Replaced and bang.lol.lol. Just kidding.
Everything works.
Jeff your a gentleman and a scholar.I thank you for all the time you took in helping me.
I'm calling you to get your address.Got something to send to you if you don't mind.
Know when I sleep tonight I won't be going over every wire and step and color codes.lol.lol.
It is unbelievable that you still can find people in this world that will help people. OH THATS RIGHT. MAYBE ONLY AMCERS.
Thanks JEFF thangs GUYS AND GALS.
I'm goona steal this from yea Jeff just for tonight.lol.

Do yourself a favor. When you get a chance buy an after market wiring harness with modern fuses and 12 circuits. It was one of the best things I did with my car.

actually i was a lousy service writer, had this problem of being honest with the customers---another story.anyways, glad to hear it all works, and you didn't have to buy an aftermarket harness--that would have been a challenge to talk you through THAT INSTALLATION!!!!!---last word--AMC-ya,happy motoring!
