71 Amx Seat Belt Resto Question
Working on a thorough cleaning of an original black vinyl interior. The seatbelts appear to be faded and are not very black (kind of gray) where they were exposed to light. Any suggestions on getting them black again or should I leave that detail alone?

Hi, usualy the belt needs to be replaced when badly faded or after any collision when used.
I have had a set like yours... The badly faded belts are ruff and not as flexable.
I use to have a link for a reputable seat belt company that has various weaves and colors. They are specialist by trade and all they need is the heads and lables if doing a full restoration. But since your doing AMC you may just send them the belt for an exact duplicate to be matched.
When I have time I'll add the link here... They may no longer be in buisness, since I have not used them since the early 90's.

Here is the link... http://www.ssnake-oyl.com/
My 71 belts are the same as GM... You should send the complete belt. I am sure they will match it.
They even have the same webbing used on 67-69 AMX... I noted that on a 62 Buick having the same webbing. Then again it could have been after market. Not very many cars prior to 66 had belts as standard.

Snake oyl does a fine job. I have used them a few times over the years. If the belt webbing on your old belts is not stiff, cut, or deteriorated (as 304 dude mentioned) you can redye them. I did that on my 69 Javelin. Clean the belts with mineral spirits. mask off anything you don't want painted (like the white tag, anchor ends, clasps, etc.) and lightly spray a few coats of vinyl dye on them. I use SEM brand as it covers very well. I used satin black on mine as it's a non-gloss color. After they had dried you may find that they are a bit stiff. Just work them by folding the belt webbing back and forth and they will lossen back up. Mine turned out looking like new.

Hi, it's up to the moderator... I have posted some tricks and helpful tips before and have had them removed due to updates or such. So, I just give my two cents here and there. I feel that most of my stuff is relative to my experiences only, have been lost by time, or have not been tried by others.
So any way, I will place a link to quicken things up a bit.. when most anyone on the net can find just about anything now these days.

Somewhat realted to this thread - I need help.
Trrying to install rear seat belt recoils along with rear seats in my 71 javelin.
I cannot find any position for the reoils that will allow the seats to fit properly.
I'm going nuts with this and I am sure it is simple.
Any tricks I should know.

Hugh?
I don't think 71 - 79 AMC's had rear seat recoils... just pull strap adjustments.
Now for the fronts, yes they mount behind the seats along the door frame. and the heads mount on the drive shaft hump.

The rear recoils were there when I took out the rear seats.
I took them out to clean and lube.
Based on the difficulty on reinstalling with the seats, it is possible they are not to be there.
I guess I will attempt to locate a pair of strap only units.
The fronts have the recoils and work perfect.
Thx.

Sorry about any posts that were deleted. There were some problems with the database along with the backups being corrupted. About 3 weeks worth of posts, PMs, and registrations were lost in the one incident. Unfortunately some good information was lost. The previous host was even worse and there were a few incidents of data loss with them as well. Hopefully it won't happen again.
