Questions about 1979/80 AMX
Hi, I like the 1979, 80 Spirit based AMX and was wondering how many of these cars were made, and what would be the value of one in mint condition Thanks.

Questions about 1979/80 AMX
According to the "Standard Catalog of American Motors 1902-1987" in 1979 there were 3,657 AMXs made. For 1980 AMX production figures it lists N/A. It seems that I have heard there were only 800 or so made in 1980 but I could be way off.
For 1979 the 258 CID 6-cylinder engine was standard, the 304 CID V-8 engine was the only engine option
For 1980 the 258 CID 6-cylinder was the only engine offered.
I honestly don't know their current values. I haven't seen enough of them sold recently to give you an idea. They're a hot looking car and there's enough performance parts available to make the 258 a real runner.
Maybe somebody else has those 1980 producton figures handy and will post them along with current values.

Thanks for the info, I suspected not many cars were made. Being a Gremlin fan I like these cars. Dick Teague's 1979 fastback styling made the car look just as modern as the new 1979 Mustang IMO.
Some years ago I saw a black 1979 AMX with the turbine rims. It was for sale in Montana, the original 304 had been replaced by a 401 but the car was stock apart from that.
Due to the fuel crisis the 304 V8 wasn't offered for 1980 MY I suspect. You might recall the Mustang lost the 302 at the end of 1979 MY and like the 1980 AMX it also had a 4.2 as the top engine in 1980 (a 255 ci version of the 302 V8). Pontiac were using a 4.3 V8 and the Camaro had its 4.4 too (262 ci) at the time.
I want to get one of these AMXs in the coming year so if anyone has a mint 1979 or 80 automatic please speak up.

I have a 79 AMX and have seen two this fall for sale. Mine is not though. Mine was my dads. It has 74000 original miles and has a stroker 304 in it. otherwise totally stock. From what I have seen a nice 79 V-8 car goes for $6000 - $8000

It's good to hear there are some owners out there. I just noticed there is a 1979 V8 AMX for sale in Florida in the classifieds section of this site, but it's a project car.
I am selling one of my cars, a V8 Fiero, once that gets done I will be watching for those 79,80s AMXs. Even the 258ci I6 is a relatively large engine for a car of that size.
