1968 AMX VIN

Ever wonder what those symbols on your AMX VIN mean? With the following information you can decode your 1968, 1969, 1970 AMX Vehicle Identification Number.

The first symbol designates the vehicle manufacturer; A = American Motors

The second symbol designates the model year; 8 = 1968

The third symbol designates the transmission type; M = Four speed manual floor shift; C = three speed automatic with floor shift.

The fourth symbol was a number designating the car line; 3 = AMX.

The fifth symbol designated body type, 9 = 2 door hard top.

The sixth symbol designated the series or class of body; as follows: 7 = AMX.

The seventh symbol was a letter designating engine type as follows: N=290 cid V-8 four-barrel; T=343 cid V-8 four-barrel; and X=390 cid V-8 four-barrel.

The following group of symbols was the sequential Serial Number and began with 100001 for cars built in Kenosha, Wis. and 700001 for cars built in Brampton, Ontario, Canada.

NOTE: For whatever reason, AMC stamped different codes on the engines valve cover tag in 1968 and 1969. 343's were stamped with a Z on the valve cover. A 390 valve cover is stamped with a W.

To confirm the correct cid for the VIN code the cid number is cast on the sides of the block in approximately 2" high numbers, they're located behind (above) the engine mounts.

1969 AMX VIN

The first symbol designates the vehicle manufacturer; A = American Motors

The second symbol designates the model year; 9 = 1969

The third symbol designates the transmission type; M = Four speed manual with floor shift; C = three speed automatic with floor shift

The fourth symbol was a number designating the car line; 3 = AMX

The fifth symbol designated body type, 9 = 2 door hard top.

The sixth symbol designated the series or class of body; as follows: 7 = AMX.

The seventh symbol was a letter designating engine type as follows: N=290 cid V-8 four-barrel; T=343 cid V-8 four-barrel; and X=390 cid V-8 four-barrel.

The following group of symbols was the sequential Serial Number and began with 100001 for cars built in Kenosha, Wis. and 700001 for cars built in Brampton, Ontario, Canada.

NOTE: For whatever reason, AMC stamped different codes on the engines valve cover tag in 1968 and 1969. 343’s were stamped with a Z on the valve cover. A 390 valve cover is stamped with a W.

Also in 1969 a Y in the VIN designates an S/S AMX with a 390 (seriously under)rated at 340hp. In 1970 the Y became the designation for the Rebel "Machine" also rated at 340 hp.

To confirm the correct cid for the VIN code the cid number is cast on the sides of the block in approximately 2" high numbers, they're located behind (above) the engine mounts.

1970 AMX VIN

The first symbol designates the vehicle manufacturer; A = American Motors

The second symbol designates the model year; 0 = 1970

The third symbol designates the transmission type; M = Four speed manual with floor shift; C = three speed automatic with floor shift

The fourth symbol was a number designating the car line; 3 = AMX

The fifth symbol designated body type, 9 = 2 door hard top.

The sixth symbol designated the series or class of body; as follows: 7 = AMX.

The seventh symbol was a letter designating engine type as follows: P = 360 cid V-8 four-barrel; and X=390 cid V-8 four-barrel.

The following group of symbols was the sequential Serial Number and began with 100001 for cars built in Kenosha, Wis. and 700001 for cars built in Brampton, Ontario, Canada.

NOTE: The valve cover tags were now stamped using the same code as the VIN.

In 1970 the Y in the VIN now designated the 340hp 390 cid Rebel "Machine".

To confirm the correct cid for the VIN code the cid number is cast on the sides of the block in approximately 2" high numbers, they're located behind (above) the engine mounts.

Deciphering the valve cover tag on AMC V/8 engines

Example: 306X15

First number: Year
0 = 1967
1 = 1968
2 = 1969
3 = 1970
4 = 1971
5 = 1972
6 = 1973
7 = 1974

Second and third numbers: Month
1 = January
2 = February
etc.

Letter= Engine size
H = 290-2bbl (67-69)
N = 290-4bbl (68-69)
H = 304-2bbl (70-up)
S = 343-2bbl (67-69)
Z = 343-4bbl (67-69)
N = 360-2bbl (70-up)
P = 360-4bbl (70-up)
W = 390-4bbl (68-69)
X = 390-4bbl (1970)
Y = 390-4bbl (1970 Machine)
Z = 401-4bbl (71-up)

Last two numbers: Day

*NOTE: some letters repeat, so refer to respective dates.

Engine build dates precede the build date of the car by as little as two days, and up to two weeks. Therefore, the example above (306X15) would be a 1970 390-4bbl built June 15th, and probably installed in the car built in the third week of June, 1970.
